Our Approach And Program Components

Calm Rehab’s Clinical Team understands that different clients respond to different approaches, we, therefore, use an integrative approach in helping our clients to recover from drug and alcohol addiction and abuse. But what does that really mean?
Below is a summary explaining some of the effective techniques we incorporate into our programs.

Integrative Approach

Integrative Approach is the term used to describe the use of multiple psychotherapy approaches which are tailored to the individual needs of the client. Calm Rehab incorporates a number of proven therapy techniques throughout the program, including in one-to-one counselling and group counselling sessions.

Motivational Interviewing

This is a technique where the clients explore feelings and insecurities while finding the motivation to change. In this process, the therapist adopts a focused and goal-driven approach to work through any resistance to develop discrepancies within the client’s thought processes and promote changes from within.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Commonly referred to as CBT, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on challenging and changing client behaviors and providing coping strategies. This approach is beneficial to our clients as can improve mental health and emotional regulation while promoting self-awareness helping the client to change the way they think and behave.

Person Centered Therapy

Person Centered Therapy is a client led approach where the therapist creates a safe space with empathy and understanding to allow the client autonomy to be able to reach a deeper understanding of their ways of being. This is an effective approach which seeks to remove fear of judgment from the client.

How we do it

12 Step and Promotion of Choice

Calm Rehab is not a 12-Step based rehab, and we are respectful that a 12-Step approach is not for everyone.  We do provide all of our clients with an introduction to 12-Step Meetings and explain the philosophies and principles behind a 12 Step approach. 12 Step meetings are widely accessible and can provide effective support for maintaining sobriety post-treatment. As a choice-promoting rehab, we actively support any of our clients who choose to focus on the 12-Step approach.

Mindfulness Groups

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy has been proven to be an effective therapeutic approach in reducing cravings as well as treating depression. Calm Rehab incorporates a range of mindfulness practices into group therapy sessions, as well as during a weekly workshop.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and commitment therapy invites people to open up to unpleasant feelings and learn not to overreact to them. This is done in a safe environment and is supportive in helping some clients overcome past trauma.  ACT teaches clients to be aware, accept, and embrace their private events, especially previously unwanted ones.

Relapse Prevention

Relapse Prevention is an important component in Calm’s treatment of drug and alcohol addiction and is covered in regular afternoon workshops. Relapse Prevention is a cognitive behavioural approach which identifies potential high-risk situations, providing education as well as coping strategies to our clients to support their ongoing recovery.
